Paula Begoun, the self-proclaimed “Cosmetics Cop,” says “you don’t need an eye cream.” Many people who have been spending their hard earned money each month on eye creams started asking “why?” If you use an eye cream and see results, don’t stop. Paula was simply trying to send a message that there are other options. It’s also practical to know that her own brand of skin care products does not offer an eye cream for sale, so her marketing will obviously cater to however she can parlay her voice into revenues.

While I respect Paula and think she is an icon in the cosmetics industry, I will expand on her point a little bit further. She stresses that you don’t need an eye cream as she states a daily moisturizer is just fine for the skin underneath the eyes. (Or perhaps, another anti aging facial cream that works the skin in that area and gives the desired plumping effect.) But, what she may be saying here, and this is just my two cents of advice, is that you are better off with an eye serum.

Eye serums have become a hot topic in recent years. Mostly because they are using some of the latest imported anti aging cosmeceutical ingredients from laboratories in far away places such as France and Switzerland. Sometimes people will see a serum as a medicinal approach and use a serum instead of an eye cream. While I am an advocate of anti aging skin care, and feel that the skin has to be treated to the best of one’s financial ability, I’m more of a serum person. Let me tell you why.

First, a serum is fast-absorbing. It will be applied to the area of skin under the eyes and around the orbital bone before any other anti aging cream. So that means if you are using a full-face anti wrinkle cream, use the eye serum first. A serum will get to the DNA level much quicker than any other form of skin treatment, and it’s important it absorbs into the skin first and foremost. Using a cream on top of it is fine, just allow the skin ample time to take in the serum, which is usually 2-5 minutes at the maximum. I will usually cleanse, then apply a serum. While waiting for it to dry, I’ll brush my teeth, set aside my clothing, or do other personal hygiene chores and then come back and apply an anti aging cream. I find this a good way to pass those two minutes or so while the serum absorbs.

Another reasons serums are the preferred choice by skin care consumers and professionals is because their viscosity allows formulators to use high-end ingredients. Using a cream form only allows certain ingredients to bond, and more viscous formula brings upon a more therapeutic (long term) approach to treating skin.

I’ve done plenty of research, and the almighty Cosmetics Cop seems to be right. Assuming you use a daily eye serum, you don’t need an eye cream!
